Village Market – Essay in English

A market is a place where buyers and sellers meet. In towns and cities, there are permanent markets. At Patna, we know of New Market, Patna Market, etc. But in villages periodical markets are held. They are held twice a week or once a week. A place is fixed, and the market is organised there. On the fixed day in the village, where the market is held, it is full of life. People from towns go there with their goods and offer them for sale.

The farmers are seen carrying their produce on their heads since early morning. Some carry vegetables. Gur, rice and pulses, wheat, sugarcane, red chillies, etc. are also carried there for sale. Merchants from towns take their goods such as toys, lanterns etc.

Fishermen carry their fish in baskets and fruit vendors go with fruits. Cloth merchants are also seen as busy on that day.

The shops are set either in temporary sheds or open places. There is a great noise and buyers with bags are seen making enquiries about the prices of goods. People push on one another and make a great noise. Some people carry birds like parrots and pigeons and offer them for sale.

The vendors raise their voices to attract customers and their continued noise deafens men’s ears. Carpenters take their wooden goods and the blacksmiths take their iron articles.

Boys have a happy time. They run about and blow whistles. Small girls and women are seen purchasing sweets and fruits. The heads of families go to purchase needles, matches, sugar and thread.

Loafers are also busy on this day. They move about creating trouble. Sometimes they help the pick-pockets in carrying on their business.

Such markets are really very useful. They are centres of trade. They are meeting grounds where men of different villages assemble and know about the problems of one another.
