The Beggar Essay in English

India is the land of plenty. But there is poverty amidst plenty. So we can see beggars everywhere. They can be seen in towns, villages, on roads and on streets. Beggars are those who beg. Most of them are homeless.

They live in slums and gutters. People hate them. They are looked down upon with contempt. They are laughed at. Dogs also bark at them. Sometimes children beat them. They spit on them. Most people dislike seeing them.

Beggars can be seen in large numbers at religious places. They can be seen everywhere. At Varanasi, they are seen crowding the ghats and temples. People cannot pass without paying them. Streets are full of beggars there. They sit in rows at railway stations and bus stands. They beg in trains.

Beggars are mostly sick, wounded and disabled persons. Some of them are blind. Some of them are lame. Some of them are lepers. Some are invalids. They are mostly weak. They are seen in fags. They put on dirty clothes. They have bowls in their hands. They have sad faces. They sleep on roadsides. They are seen licking the rubbish of hotels.

They beg and bless. They chant sometimes. Some of the beggars have musical instruments. Some of them are good singers. They naturally attract our sight. They force us to pause and pay. Their tears soften our hearts. They make us kind. They make us lament.

The beggars have a wretched life. They lead a cursed life. They face starvation. They have no shelter. They bear the heat of the hot sun. Nobody is there to nurse the beggars in illness. They live unseen. They die without medical help. They beg for alms. But people rebuke them. People don’t care for them. The government fails to help them.
